New roads at Elms Field

Thursday 28th February, 2019

With work progressing apace at Elms Field the project is about to take a major step forward as new roads, Biscoe Way and Earle Crescent, start to open up to cars and pedestrians.

The lower section of Elms Road will also close permanently from its junction with Wellington Road up to the Plaza area by Nuffield Health.

Cllr Philip Mirfin, executive member for regeneration, said: "I'm very pleased to see the new roads open as it means we can start work on digging up the lower section of Elms Road to become part of the open space.

"The new park, with its accessible destination play area, will be a fantastic space for the town and its families and I'm really looking forward to seeing it open later this summer.

"I'd like to thank the Wokingham Society for the research they did in coming up with names for these new roads which, like Ellison Way, have been named after former residents of The Elms on Broad Street."

Following the closure of the lower section of Elms Road there will be no direct access to the remaining section of Elms Road, Ellison Way, Waterford Way and the Plaza from Wellington Road as the western section of Earle Crescent will remain shut whilst the houses are built along this side of the park.

Alternative access will be provided via, Biscoe Way, the new road which connects Elms Field through to Shute End adjacent to the Council Offices, and along the northern section of Earle Crescent, the new road which runs along the top of the Elms Field park between Biscoe Way and Elms Road. Pedestrian footways will also be in place along these new roads.

Cllr Mirfin continued: "We are just in the process of agreeing a formal date for the closure of Elms Road and opening of Biscoe Way and Earle Crescent but anticipate this will be by mid-March. We will be publicising more information soon so keep an eye out for further updates."
